There was a recent media feeding frenzy over the "revelation" that fish oil could cause prostate cancer. However the problem was that even the people who conducted the study conceded that there was no empirical link! This was because the study was an epidemiological one which attempts to show CORRELATION and not CAUSATION. There is a huge difference (this is discussed entertainingly in the link at the bottom of this article by nutrition expert Dr John Berardi).
Why do these studies make it into the media? Because they are alarmist and attention grabbing - thousands of people consume fish oil so it is fair to say that anyone who values their health would be drawn to this article and (rightly) concerned.
On a more balanced level it is true that fish oil decreases inflamation - so far, so good - however, decreasing inflamation too much is a bad thing. We need a degree of inflamation to catabolise free radicals etc. So in theory TOO MUCH fish oil could ramp down inflamation too much and leave you open to potential problems. However this would have to be Omega 3's, and, as our diet is so badly deficient in this type of fish oil this would be unlikely. Secondly, to rebalance the ratio we just need to consume more Omega 6 and 9, and as these are more than abundant in our diet (too much so, many would argue), once again this would not be a problem.
The truth is, that the huge benefits of fish oil on cardiovascular health, eye health, joint health and brain health far outweigh any negatives, with the caveat being that you must look to purchasing one that is PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE. These are the only type that have been sufficiently purified of PCB's, mercury and other toxins. The most common question I get asked, bar none, is what are the best supplements for fat loss.
Well, the answer is simple and complicated at the same time - You must always allow for biochemical individuality, in other words everyone responds to foods, liquids and supplements in unique ways. For one person 5 coffees a day works just fine and doesn't disrupt sleep, for another any caffeine post -12pm will cause sleep issues, guaranteed.
However, there are some elements that have a relatively uniform effect on the body (otherwise pharmaceutical drugs would never be allowed if everyones response to them was dramatically varied). These are the supplements I have chosen for a comprehensive approach to supplemental fat loss:
1. Betaine HCL:
The cornerstone and foundation of any supplemental protocol. If you do not have enough stomach acid then you cannot effectively digest food, and your mineral and vitamin status is compromised. Zinc, magnesium and B vitamins are all contingent on adequate levels of HCL in the stomach. Lack of acidity in the stomach also raises your risk of contracting the stomach parasite and ulcer causing bacteria, h.pylori and indeed contributes to "acid indigestion" and reflux.
2. Fish Oil:
This is the Big One. Fish oil switches on the genes that burn fat and downregulates the ones that store it. It is superb for cognitive and joint function and if you check on the medical publications pubmed.com you will see that there is research for everything from autism to eczema, digestive ailments to estrogen dominance. It makes you feel fuller for longer, oils your joints, reduces inflamation and increases muscle mass. What more could you ask for?
When we are stressed out, we pee minerals out - good examples are the salt cravings that people under stress often experience (sodium deficiency). Magnesium is THE mineral of blood sugar management. It ushers glycogen into muscle rather than letting it set up store as fat, increases the amount of insulin receptor sites you have, improves sleep, improves your bodies response to stress and, whilst a "relaxing" nutrient, is vital in the KREBS cycle of energy production. If your sleep is poor you overproduce cortisol, this leads to fat storage around the midriff and breaks down muscle tissue - therefore adding magnesium to your regime will definitely improve body composition. If you sweat, you need to start taking magnesium, and if you DON'T sweat - you ain't exercising enough!
When people start to lose fat they often feel rubbish. Fat has a tendency to be pro-inflamatory and a good storage site for toxins, hence you get a release of toxicity into the blood stream. This has a tendency to inundate the liver with more work than it can deal with. A good multi can provide the essential buidling blocks for good detoxification (ie the precursors to methylation, glycination etc). It also plugs the gaps in your diet as even the best of diets can still leave you with nutrient deficient (owing in part to poor soil quality that doesn't provide good doses of magnesium and zinc).
5. Vitamin D3:
If you don't know why this is on the list than you are either a) new to my website or b) have been paying no attention to anything on it. Vitamin D is VITAL - forget body composition for the moment and lets just say it is also vital for - bone health, a protective from breast cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, MS etc etc. Just check out Dr Robert Heaney's lecture in my VIDEO'S section for a detailed look at this ultra-vital nutrient. It is excellent for increasing lean muscle mass and improving insulin sensitivity.
And that's it, nothing exotic, no Himalayan Goat Droppings freeze dried and coated in apple cider vinegar - just simple, effective and economical ways of improving your bodies composition, and more importantly, the way it functions.

One of the principal questions I ask new clients is: "Does your urine smell of asparagus when you eat it". If the answer is "yes", we have a problem..
Contrary to popular belief, "asparagus wee" is not a normal, nor desirable by-product of eating this vegetable. It is symptomatic of the MTHFR gene (methylene tetra hydra folate reductase gene) and is THE key risk factor for cardiovascular health (just ask Dr Mark Houston from the Nashville Hypertension Institute). Yes, it is a greater risk indicator than even that of cholesterol (which has been overblown out of all proportion as a risk factor for heart disease by the way...)
Why is the MTHFR gene so dangerous? Well it was passed down to us by the Roman's during their conquest of Britain, and is an inbuilt genetic defect that prevents effective methylation (one of the many ways in which the body detoxifies itself on a daily basis).
This is because the body has a defect that prevents adequate absorption and usage of folates. The upshot is that you get an increase in a highly dangerous amino acid called homocysteine. When your homocysteine is elevated your risk of cardiovascular disease goes up.
So what can you do, well the good news is that just taking a specific supplement called METHYLATOR PLUS (£20 for 3 months supply) can reduce your risk to that of a person without the gene in just a matter of weeks.
I don't doubt that there will be those who feel this is alarmist, or at the very least that they have never heard of this before. In respect to this I have put a number of pdf's with this article so, for those effected ,you can do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

Research conducted by Dr John Berardi and the Precision Nutrition team showed that people who consumed large dosages of fish oil (ie 10g plus per day) exhibited a 450-500 kcal increase in their basal metabolism. In other words consuming more fat actually increased your metabolism, decreased your body fat and improved lean muscle mass.
Fat makes you slim, its official.

I often get asked why magnesium is so critically important- why don't I focus more on calcium or some other minerals. And why can't I get enough magnesium from my diet?
Well the simple answer is, unfortunately due to the poor quality of soil nowadays, zinc and magnesium are woefully inadequate in our diet. Yes you can get a lot from eating nuts and seeds, but not what I would call a therapeutic dosage (enough to offset health issues such as poor sleep for example). And even if you could get it through your diet, the net result of eating all those nuts and seeds would be a very fat person who was sleeping well !

I love Summertime, but unfortunately it always brought with it the sheer misery of hayfever.And I got it bad - a ridiculously itchy nose which was constantly running, dry and gritty eyes, the roof of my mouth so itchy that I wanted to take sandpaper to it and even occasionally wheezing and coughing. With our proximity to the New Forest we are all aware of the dangers of tick bites and the potential for contracting Lymes Disease as a result.
The bulls-eye rash, fever and muscle pain are all potential problems that may accompany this particularly nasty infection, but what many people do not realise is that if left untreated there are potentially devastating neurological complications that can be highly disabling.
